Our Waiting Paid Off!

The Secretary of Commerce announced the rescheduled public hearing will take place on September 22 at O’Brien Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds from 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM.

The hearing location is perfect, since this is where the Coastal Commission heard the facts from both sides and voted 8-2 against the toll road. Also the Park and Trestles beach are in San Diego County, so it’s ideal to hold the hearing where the project will have the worst impacts.

The hearing is open to all members of the public, and anyone wishing to provide oral testimony at the hearing must submit a written request via US mail or commercial carrier to NOAA no later than September 12, 2008. Neither requests after this date nor requests submitted by fax, email or voicemail will be considered. In the request, please include full name, address and a statement that the testimony will be provided on behalf of the individual.

It’s critical that you register to speak and attend the hearing to show your strong opposition to the toll road. As we saw with the Coastal Commission, decision makers take notice and weigh their decision more carefully when thousands of people attend a public hearing. It’s imperative that Save Trestles supporters, from near and far, are present to ensure the Commission’s decision is upheld.

We will be sending out more concrete details as they come, but in the meantime, please mail your request to speak immediately. As always, you can still attend a public hearing even if you do not speak. But the more people we having testifying on behalf of Trestles and San Onofre, the greater chance we have of finally winning this battle!

Send written request to:
Thomas Street, Attorney Advisor
NOAA Office of General Counsel for Ocean Services
1305 East-West Highway, Room 6111
Silver Spring, MD 20910

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT: STEFANIE SEKICH, SURFRIDER FOUNDATION

ASK CALIFORNIA’S SENATE TO RISE ABOVE PLASTICS: Support AB 2058 http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/08/ask-californias-senate-to-rise-above-plastics-support-ab-2058/ http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/08/ask-californias-senate-to-rise-above-plastics-support-ab-2058/#comments Sat, 02 Aug 2008 22:14:03 +0000 Robyn News Hot Topics campaign http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/08/ask-californias-senate-to-rise-above-plastics-support-ab-2058/ Now is the time to ask your state representative to help RISE
ABOVE PLASTICS by enacting progressive legislation to fight
marine debris. AB 2058 would enact a regulation to help address
the prevalence of single-use plastic bags, which easily enter
the litter stream and wreak havoc on our ocean environment.

You can take action on this alert via the web at:
http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/ab2058final/iekxnwzo735nn6i

Visit the web address to tell your friends about this.

We encourage you to take action by August 30, 2008!
The unregulated use of single-use plastic carryout
bags is detrimental to the fragile marine environment and a
wasteful use of our natural resources. Plastic bag litter is
responsible for the deaths of thousands of birds, marine
mammals, and endangered turtles which mistake them for food or
become entangled in them. Californians use an estimated 19
billion plastic bags per year, less than 5% of which are
currently being recycled, and millions of dollars of taxpayer
money are be spent annually to clean up plastic litter.

AB 2058 would result in a significant reduction in the amount of
plastic bag litter by requiring large grocery stores and
pharmacies to charge 25 cents for plastic bags if certain
diversion requirements are not met by 2011, thereby encouraging
shoppers to bring reusable bags to the store. The money from the
fee will be used by the stores to implement specified plastic
carryout bag recycling, plastic carryout bag cleanup, and
plastic carryout bag waste reduction programs. This fee will
help negate the negative impacts of plastic bags while at the
same time decreasing the number of plastic bags used. This will
result in the reduction of plastic litter in our environment and
the increased use of reusable bags which are durable, widely
available, affordable, and much safer for the environment.

CALL FOR OCEAN PROTECTIONS http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/08/surfrider-foundation-opposes-efforts-to-lift-the-offshore-oil-moratorium/ http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/08/surfrider-foundation-opposes-efforts-to-lift-the-offshore-oil-moratorium/#comments Fri, 01 Aug 2008 15:15:32 +0000 Robyn Hot Topics campaign http://surfridernb.com/site/2008/06/surfrider-foundation-opposes-efforts-to-lift-the-offshore-oil-moratorium/ As you may know, there are currently about 20 proposals to build
ocean desalination facilities along the California coast. The
environmental community has been tracking and providing feedback
to several California government agencies about ocean
desalination to ensure that these are designed and located to
avoid environmental damage.

These ocean desalination projects are extremely energy-intensive
and can potentially undermine California’s efforts to reduce our
greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the ocean water intakes
for these facilities can suck up and kill marine life -
significantly affecting healthy marine life populations and
healthy oceans.

The good news is that several agencies are successfully testing
alternative intake designs that eliminate marine life deaths and
filtration systems that reduce energy demand for desal. The bad
news is that the largest ocean desalination facility proposed in
the western hemisphere is before the Coastal Commission and
State Lands Commission for approval this month. This facility is
not employing the best available design and technology to
protect our coast and ocean.

Tell the Coastal Commission and the State Lands Commission you
insist that this facility fully mitigate the adverse impacts it
will cause.

Thank you,

Joe Geever
