In this new Blogs and Bios section we will try to give you some insight into the personalities on the Surfrider Foundation- Newport Beach Chapter Steering Committee. We will also blog about ideas, campaigns, research, politics and anything else relevant to Surfrider Foundation and all of us in the chapter.

This week we will start out with a bio of our Vice Chairman - Dudley Tabakin
Dudley Tabakin
Dudley joined Surfrider after moving out to California from Cape Town, South Africa via Oxford, England. Convinced by a brief 2 year stint in Oxford that rivers don’t provide as good surf as the ocean and that temperatures below 50 are unacceptable living conditions, he moved out with his wife Melanie to Irvine in 2003.

How Clean is the Water We Surf In?

In our January meeting, Dr Jack Skinner and John Kappeler gave us an in depth look into the quality of the water we are surfing in.
Did you know that “safe” bacteria limits would result in 1 in 50 of us getting some sort of illness after swimming or surfing.

Protect Ocean Wildlife from Cooling Water Intakes

As you know, Surfrider Foundation, CA Coastkeeper Alliance, Sierra Club and a coalition of many environmental organizations have been working for years to compel coastal power plants to modernize their cooling systems and minimize the unnecessary killing of marine life.

This effort is to enforce a part of the Clean Water Act, passed by Congress in the early 1970s, and avoided by the electrical generating industry for decades. Since US EPA has been unable or unwilling to stand up and do their job for the past three decades, California is taking steps to stop the destruction of marine life and finally make the industry comply with this law — AND IT IS WELL PAST TIME!!
